Sustainability Tips
April’s Sustainability Tip of the Month!
Try buying local and package-free when possible! Buying local reduces the carbon emissions of food transportation. As we enter the spring season, it is a great time to support local farmers by going to markets and pick-your-own farms! Containers/packaging make up a majority of municipal solid waste. By making an effort to reduce packaged product purchases, you can help cut back on waste.
Sustainability Tips for Everyday Life
- Reduce!
- Worried your fruit might go bad? Freeze it! That way you can successfully reduce food waste and save money.
- Unplug your electronic devices at nighttime. Even if they’re not turned on, simply having a device plugged in leads to a phenomenon known as phantom energy which plays a role in supporting the coal industry.
- Wash your clothing in cold water and/or hang them to dry.
- Reuse!
- Stay away from fast fashion: buy clothing from local thrift stores, goodwill, and other second hand shops.
- Keep reusable bags in your car to use on spontaneous grocery trips.
- Bring a reusable mug to coffee shops instead of using a single-use cup!
- Recycle!
- Donate your used clothes and items to local donation centers.
- Start a compost pile for your food scraps and yard trimmings instead of throwing them in the landfill.
- Recycling rules and regulation are are different in every city! Learn how to properly recycle in Raleigh at https://www.raleighnc.gov/recycling
