Graduate Student Panel

On April 16th, 2021, the Global WaSH Student Chapter hosted its first graduate student panel! We invited 4 graduate students from NCSU to talk about their current research in water, sanitation, and hygiene and related areas.

Sean Daly: “Modeling Exposure to Fecal Contamination due to Multiple Water Source Use.”

Sean is a PhD student for Dr. Angela Harris in the NCSU Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene cluster. His work focuses on the quality and behaviors surrounding drinking water in low- and middle-income regions, and how humans are exposed to unsafe drinking water.

Savanna Smith: “Microbial Ecology in Sanitation Systems”

Savanna is a second-year PhD student in Dr. Francis de los Reyes’ research group. She works on microbial community assembly in engineered bioreactors and sanitation systems. Her general research interests are in biological wastewater treatment and global sanitation solutions.

Nancy Lee Alexander: “Assessment of drinking water quality in private well communities”

Emily Floess: “Do the Health Benefits of Boiling Drinking Water Outweigh the Associated Impacts of Increased Household Air Pollution Exposure?”

Emily is a second-year PhD student in Dr. Andrew Grieshop’s research group. Her current projects include modeling health and climate benefits of air quality and drinking water interventions, and building a low cost instrument for measuring air pollutants. Her additional research interests include energy poverty intervention evaluation and field measurements of cleaner cooking solutions.
