Beauty & Joy of Computing is one of the five initial pilot programs for the new AP CS Principles course. Our members helped NC high school teachers to organize class resources, build a test bank of questions, and facilitate the transition to this new pilot course.
This outreach consisted of a 10-week LEGO Robotics course offered in partnership with Citizen Schools. The class met once a week for 2 hours and was taught by a combination of STARS volunteers, a Citizen Schools Teaching Fellow, and other volunteers from the community.
We designed counselor kits that contained information on colleges, majors, applications, etc. This project distributed useful computer science information to middle and high schools in the Raleigh-Durham area.
Latina/Latino Computer Science majors share their passion for computing by bringing technology showcases to students in schools with large Hispanic populations.
STARS has volunteered with the Kramden Institute on mini Geek-A-Thons where computers were refurbished and given to needing kids in North Carolina.
Once every two weeks, our group visited the Raleigh Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center nursing home and helped residents with e-mail and other computer skills in order to stay in contact with their loved ones.
We partnered with USCRI, a non-profit organization that assists refugees and immigrants in resettling in the United States, in teaching fundamental computer literacy to members of the Raleigh refugee community.
