Beauty & Joy of Computing

bjc-logoBeauty & Joy of Computing is one of the five initial pilot programs for the new AP CS Principles course. Our members helped NC high school teachers to organize class resources, build a test bank of questions, and facilitate the transition to this new pilot course.

 

Citizen Schools

This outreach consisted of a 10-week LEGO Robotics course offered in partnership with Citizen Schools. The class met once a week for 2 hours and was taught by a combination of STARS volunteers, a Citizen Schools Teaching Fellow, and other volunteers from the community.

 

Dissemination & Marketing

dissemination-marketing-logoWe designed counselor kits that contained information on colleges, majors, applications, etc. This project distributed useful computer science information to middle and high schools in the Raleigh-Durham area.

 

Hispanic Student Outreach

hispanic-outreachLatina/Latino Computer Science majors share their passion for computing by bringing technology showcases to students in schools with large Hispanic populations.

 

 

Kramden Institute

geek-logo STARS has volunteered with the Kramden Institute on mini Geek-A-Thons where computers were refurbished and given to needing kids in North Carolina.

 

 

Nursing Home Outreach

nursing-home-logoOnce every two weeks, our group visited the Raleigh Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center nursing home and helped residents with e-mail and other computer skills in order to stay in contact with their loved ones.

 

USCRI Refugee Outreach

uscri-logoWe partnered with USCRI, a non-profit organization that assists refugees and immigrants in resettling in the United States, in teaching fundamental computer literacy to members of the Raleigh refugee community.
