Q&A with Designers of Color: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at 2019 AATS Fashion Exposé

The 22nd Annual Fashion Exposé was presented by the African-American Textile Society (AATS) on Thursday, Apr. 11 in Talley Student Union. Designers were curated from all over campus to showcase their original fashion lines. The Nubian Message sat down with three designers of color to discuss their experiences with fashion.

APIDA Voices: An Exploration of the Intersectionality of Mental Health

“Exploring Mental Health in the APIDA Experience” was a panel and small group discussion in which members of NC State’s Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) community shared their perspectives on the intersections between their identities and mental health, and unpacked the ideas surrounding mental illnesses in their community.The discussion was a part of APIDA Heritage Month and hosted by the Counseling Center and Mental Health Ambassadors on April 1 in Witherspoon Student Center.

Town Hall Proposes, Discusses Solutions for Campus Racial Climate

The Student Government Diversity Outreach Department hosted a racial climate town hall on Wednesday, Mar. 6 in Witherspoon Student Center. Sam Chan, a third-year studying political science and business administration, and Shelsey Hall, a fourth-year studying philosophy and political science, are co-directors of the Department of Diversity Outreach.

Film, Discussion Centers Self-Image and Illusions in Media

In observance of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the Women’s Center, Student Health Services and Counseling Center hosted a screening and discussion of “The Illusionists” (dir. Elena Rossini, 2015), a documentary that examines the relationship between the media, capitalism, beauty and self-image from a global perspective.

Serenity Hargrove looks at one of the pieces on display at the Politicization & Sexualization of Black Bodies art exhibit. The opening reception was held on Monday, Feb. 11 at the Witherspoon Student Center Art Gallery, and was hosted by the NC State Women's Center and the African American Cultural Center. The gallery runs until March 21, and features stories and paintings created by NC State students and staff.

New Exhibit Features Art from Wolfpack, Counternarratives About the Black Body

The opening of “The Politicization and Sexualization of Black Bodies” exhibition was held on Feb. 11 in Witherspoon Student Center. The exhibition features the artistic works of NC State students, faculty and staff that tell their counternarratives and experiences of self-image and acceptance within higher education and historically white institutions.
