FAQ

What is quidditch?

“Quidditch is a mixed gender contact sport with a unique mix of elements from rugby, dodgeball, and tag. A quidditch team is made up of seven athletes who play with brooms between their legs at all times. While the game can appear chaotic to the casual observer, once familiar with the basic rules, quidditch is an exciting sport to watch and even more exciting to play.”

How do you play quidditch?

There are four positions in quidditch; chaser, seeker, beater, and keeper.  The chasers try to score through the hoops with the quaffle, which is a slightly deflated volleyball. The keepers try to defend these hoops from goals.  Beaters use bludgers, which are dodgeballs, to “beat” the opposing team, which forces beat players to run back to hoops. Finally, seekers work to end the game by catching the golden snitch. Below is a helpful graphic from the USQ website.

How do I join?

Anyone is welcome to join the team at anytime during the semester! We have open practices, which means anyone is welcome to come try out quidditch.  Although we do require dues for players who want to officially be on the team and go to tournaments, there is no cost to attend our practices.  Feel free to email the team email (ncsuclubquidditch@gmail.com) or reach out to any of the officers for more information.  Our complete practice schedule is available on the team calendar.

What is the snitch?

The golden snitch is actually a person in muggle quidditch.  Released towards the end of the game, the snitch is a player from neither of the teams playing. They were bright yellow shorts, with a yellow sock containing a tennis ball attached at the end.  The seekers must attempt to remove this from the back of the snitch’s shorts.

Is any past experience required?

There is no past experience required! Most people have never played quidditch before, so we will teach you everything you need to know.

How often are practices?

The team practices three nights a week, for two hours at each practice.  Practices are typically held at either Miller Fields or Harris Field.  Team members are required to attend 50% of all practices.
