History

The Windhover is N.C. State University’s award-winning annual literary and visual arts publication, which was first published in 1964. The journal has served as a creative outlet for students, who can submit anything from poems to photography and short stories to songs throughout the year. The Windhover staff members then select submissions from N.C. State students and compile them into the journal, which has historically been circulated in the spring.

The Windhover
began as a mostly literary journal, but has evolved to include a steady balance of both visual and literary submissions. In 2003, the publication began accepting audio submissions, which were included on a music CD that accompanied the book.

Literary submissions for The Windhover mostly come from students of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and visual submissions tend to come from students of the College of Design. Similarly, The Windhover‘s staff mostly comes from these colleges.

The Windhover
was not published from 1970 to 1973. Instead, Dr. C.P. Heaton’s creative writing class “filled the void created by the demise of The Windhover,” and published three editions of The Whole Thing, a similar literary journal. In 1974, The Windhover was reinstated and has been published ever since.
