TCA Board Elections 2023-2024

It’s time for the TCA Executive Board Elections for the 2023 – 2024 school year!

As a student in the M.S. Technical Communication program, you are automatically a member of the Technical Communication Association (TCA). As TCA officers, we coordinate professional and social events for the program, host the annual SpeedCon conference, and advocate for our graduate students. It is time to elect the next TCA officer board, and we encourage any interested members to apply!

Add your platform to the TCA Officer Platforms 2023–2024 Elections Google Doc by Wednesday, May 3, @11:59pm to be considered for the 2023-2024 TCA Executive Board. We will host elections via Google form May 4-5. Emails will be sent to the MSTC program both days. You will hear back with results on Saturday, May 6. Typically this election is very informal, and if you want a role in the TCA Board there is a space for you.

About TCA Board Elections

What: The TCA officer board will be open for all positions for the 2023–2024 school year. This is your chance to shape this program and your graduate experience; grad school is what you make it! This is an excellent resumé booster and awesome social opportunity.

Who: Any student in the MSTC program (including incoming students) is welcome to run for an officer position. You must be in the program throughout the 2023–2024 academic year.

When: Please submit your platform by Wednesday, May 3rd.

Why: Belonging to the TCA officer board is a great way to apply project management skills and ensure strong networking between the MSTC program and industry leaders. Officers are our primary liaisons and can choose the type of events/connections made by the program. It’s also a great way to build leadership skills and collaborate with your peers; to interact with faculty, administrators, and local professionals; and to make an impact in your Wolfpack and tech comm communities.

How: Submit your platform on the TCA Officer Platforms 2023-2024 Elections Google Doc. In your platform, introduce yourself and describe your leadership and relevant experience, what you hope to accomplish in your desired role, and why you are the best candidate. You must be logged in with your NCSU email address to access and add suggestions (your platform) to the document.

Role Descriptions

Below are the main responsibilities of TCA officers. At times, officers may assume the duties of multiple roles and generally help however needed. We are very collaborative.

Required positions:

President: Oversees the general affairs of the TCA and develops goals and plans. Calls meetings to order and serves as the primary point of contact for the group. Leads SpeedCon planning and opens the conference. Handles most email distribution to the MSTC listserv and external communication, inviting speakers, and being the “face†of TCA.

Vice President: Supports the president. Coordinates meetings and liaises with external groups and industry partners. Plans events. Report to the president, advise the president, serve as second in command to the president, support the president and other committee members in smoothly completing tasks, and create social media, and crisis-related communication with English department

Secretary: Keeps and distributes meeting minutes, distributes records and forms. Schedules meetings, books rooms, and sends invites and reminders. Maintains TCA shared drive and WordPress sites. In charge of internal and external documentation (program, meeting minutes, etc.), reservations for Caldwell lounge and rooms.

Treasurer: Maintains TCA and SpeedCon financial accounts/budgets, provides financial reports, and orders supplies. Works with various university offices to submit appropriations requests and proposals for funding. Coordinates with the English Department secretary to ensure that expenditures are done properly. In charge of funding requests, budgeting, spending tracking, purchase coordination, and tax forms. Further responsibilities are listed in the handover guide.

Optional positions:

GSA Representative: Attends Graduate Student Association meetings and serves on a GSA committee (to fulfill TCA’s contribution to GSA requirements). Any other officer may assume the duties of GSA representative.

Event Coordinator: Plans and coordinates the annual SpeedCon conference for the MSTC program in conjunction with other officers. Proposes and coordinates other social, professional, and educational events throughout the school year.

Social Media Coordinator: Engages new members and wider audiences. Manages Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook pages. Additionally, interacts with MSTC students on the TCA Discord. Develops and executes the social media strategy.
