Good evening, Wolfpack!  I hope this email finds you all well.  I would like to promulgate the Chancellor’s statement regarding the immigration ban.  Please know that NC State is here for you. Here is a friendly reminder of some important resources: the Office for International Affairs, the Office for International Services, the Office for International Employment, and Student Legal Services.

There are also two events coming up this week that were planned prior to the issuing of the executive order last Friday.  I encourage you all to attend.

• National Hijab Day: Wednesday 2/1 at 6:30pm in 126 Witherspoon,  (this is a collaborative event with the Muslim Student Association and the Women’s Center)
• Challenging Anti-Muslim Sentiments panel discussion: Thursday 2/2 at 7pm, Talley Mountains-Piedmont Ballroom (this is a collaborative event with CSLEPS and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences)

On a separate, but equally important note, NC State’s Counseling Center has won an Emmy Award for its #StopTheStigma video on suicide prevention.  You can watch the video here.

TRADITION OF THE WEEK

Krispy Kreme Challenge – pg. 72 of The Brick 

Running for A Dozen – Four miles, 12 donuts, 2,400 calories and thousands of dollars for charity. The Krispy Kreme Challenge was the brainchild of then-sophomore basketball guard Chris McCoy, who used this event to relieve pre-finals stress. The race: Run from the Belltower downhill two miles to the Krispy Kreme, scarf down a dozen glazed doughnuts and then dash back uphill to the tower — in less than 60 minutes. Ironically on the day of the race, in December 2004, McCoy overslept, but 10 of his friends — including Peyton Hassinger and Greg Mulholland, who became the lead organizers of the race in subsequent years — completed the inaugural race. “Sports Illustrated: On Campus” picked up the race’s potential and featured it as No. 85 in “102 More Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate.” And in 2010, ESPN covered the race in a video feature. The Challenge donated $184,000 to the North Carolina Children’s Hospital in 2013.! The winner receives a glimmering golden doughnut medal and an additional six dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, coming in at a colossal 14,400 calories.

First annual Kay Yow Celebration Run/Walk

Join us at the Talley Student Center on February 18, 2017!  It starts at 11:00 a.m. and costs $25 per participant — that price includes a really nice Nike Kay Yow shirt. 

International Festival at NC State University

We are pleased to announce an International Festival at NC State University on Friday, March 31st from 12:00pm-4:00pm at Stafford Commons. This event is sponsored by Student Involvement, Student Government, and the Office of International Services. The purpose of creating an International Festival at North Carolina State University is to encourage interactions between individuals of all backgrounds, while upholding the values of diversity, inclusivity, and cultural appreciation. This event will promote cultural competency and expose students, faculty, and staff to new perspectives and traditions from different areas around the world.

If you are interested in tabling at this event and representing a country/culture/region of your choice, please fill out an application via the Google form here.

All applications are due on Thursday, February 9th at 5:00pm. No late submissions will be accepted.

Roots and Shoots is NCSU’s only CONSERVATION CLUB! Our first meeting of 2017 will be February 2nd, at 7:00pm in David Clark Labs in room 102. On the Sociolinguistic Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Implications for Social Justice

This talk examines MLK’s dialect, and how his language varies in different settings. Audience members will gain an understanding of King’s linguistic variation across different contexts (such as the famous “I Have a Dream” Speech), as well as implications for modern day social justice. Valentine’s Day Ballroom Social Dance | Feb. 18 at 8pm
