Raleigh March for Science

We must advocate for the importance and integrity of science. We see ramped up efforts to cast doubt on scientific consensus, specifically but not limited to climate change and vaccines. We see disregard for evidence-based research, restrictions on data
dissemination, and proposed steep budget cuts to many publicly funded science agencies that conduct
research in service of the common good. We march to show appreciation to the scientific community for
their ceaseless efforts to improve humanity through understanding the world around us.
The Raleigh March for Science will take place on April 22nd, 2017 in downtown Raleigh. On the day of the
march, we will gather at Shaw University starting as early as 9 am. We will start marching towards Moore Square at 10 am.
Once we reach Moore Square, we’ll host a Community Science Fair. This science fair is intended to
facilitate engagement around science amongst many Triangle community members – young and old, students
and teachers, professionals and amateurs. Science and scientific knowledge are the outcome of countless
careful experiments, observations, and communications made by people around the world throughout human
history. We would not be alive today without the science done by farmers and midwives, and we can’t fight
climate change or prevent polio without contributions of many scientists, ranging from citizen scientists to
top researchers. You are part of the history of science, and you are part of deciding its future. We’re especially
interested in highlighting ways that science impacts people of North Carolina and science with North
Carolina roots.
We are thinking big picture and long-term. To stay involved after the March, we invite you to join us in
building AdvocateScience, a newly formed North Carolina non-profit that aims to convert science
enthusiasm into an impactful force by facilitating community spaces for engagement amongst scientists,
science-supporters, community leaders, and elected officials.
